Uncle Moe
How We Got Started

It was a combined lifelong love of music and children that lead to the formation of Uncle Moe.  The creative team behind Uncle Moe are brothers-in-law Tom Bleakney and Matt Kaplan.

Tom Bleakney, a certified special ed teacher, is owner of the Kids Place Daycare in Scituate MA.   He spends his days playing music, dancing, building towers and generally entertaining 10 children aged 3 months to 6 years.  Matt Kaplan founded Backyard Jams; a business that brought together chidren and adults in a studio setting to jam, learn how to make music and just have a good time.  Backyard Jams was also well known for its rock-n-roll birthday parties where kids jam on stage with real instruments and make their own rock videos before settling down to the cake and ice cream.

During the summer of 2004, in an effort to entertain the kids at a big outdoor party, Matt and Tom decided they had listened to enough kids music to start making some of their own.  The band first start playing songs from Dan Zanes, Woody Guthrie, Disney, and the Wiggles. Uncle Moe was a big hit at the party and the group decided it would be fun to make a go of it as a band that plays original family music.

Being parents themselves, Matt and Tom knew what it took to make children of all ages laugh and dance; so they set out to create the characters that would make up the band.   The characters in the band include family members and friends alike. There's the mellow surfer, the blues man, the punk rocker, the cowboy that loves country music, the young guys, and the hip sax playing jazz musician.  Uncle Moe makes a real effort to create music from all genres. When writing new songs they try to include subject matter that appeals to kids, with music that is appealing to the whole family.   With a rotating cast of characters and musicians Uncle Moe aims to have something for everyone.

Uncle Moe shows are attended by kids 2 and 3 years old all the way up to folks 80 years and beyond. Moms and Dads dance with their kids and even grandparents get up for the Hokey Pokey, because as the song says, that’s what it’s all about. From Johnny Cash inspired country and folk music to the golden oldies of the fifties. From reggae to rock-n-roll and all things in between, Uncle Moe has something for everyone. Can’t wait to see you all at the next show. Keep on dancing!!
